Official Statement from Representatives of the Post-Graduate Work Permit Pilot Project

Under changes this year, International students accepted into programs of study at institutions participating in the International Student Pilot Project will, after August 31, 2012, not be able to apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit.

International students who are not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Pilot may be eligible for other federal work programs. These include:

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

This is the basic Canadian temporary work program. It allows you to apply to work in Canada on a temporary basis where there is an immediate need for workers in key occupations and where Canadian workers are not available. You will require a job offer and an employer willing to sponsor you. The employer may also require a Labour Market Opinion about the need for temporary workers, which they would request through Service Canada.

• You will need to demonstrate that you plan to leave Canada at the end of the work permit, that you have enough money to support yourself in Canada, that you have no criminal record and are not a risk to Canada and that you are in good health.

International Experience Canada Programs.

• Young people between the ages of 18-35 may wish to consider participation in International Youth Programs such as the Working Holiday Visa, a Young Professional placement or an international co-op work position. Under these programs, students from countries with reciprocal agreements with Canada may work in Canada temporarily to gain international cultural and professional experience. Where there is no such agreement, young people may still be able to participate through an organization recognized by International Experience Canada.
